By the age of 25 I shall be successful, married with kids and live in a house surrounded by a white picket fence. Does this statement sound familiar to anyone reading this, especially females born in the nineties and earlier, when we as kids played “house house” game?. Continue reading “Life at 25: Not as peachy as it appears!”
A woman, she is fearfully and wonderfully made .. she bears the weight of the world on her shoulders .. she is created with a purpose from the very beginning .. she is how the world replenishes itself with life of children .. she is the image of strength .. she shapes minds of the future.. she is LOVED beyond her own understanding .. So just remember ladies, you are very Special to this world.
So today in South Africa, we celebrate Women’s day. A day set out to acknowledge women for who they are and what they can achieve. It’s also a day that empowers women and a day that strives for ending abuse, creating equality for women in the workplace, and striving for better conditions to empower girls from when they young and in school. Basically, it’s a day to Honor Women and teach them that we are important, just as important as men in the world. This movement is not just specific to South Africa, it is also celebrated world wide every year on the 8th of March. However my message is to help motivate you, women, to strive and acknowledge your worth each and every morning you awake.
It’s shocking, or maybe not, to realize that women have been attached to the stigma of inferiority. What’s worse is that women were captives to this concept for so long that women are victims of believing it to be true. Well I’m here to change your mind if you still have any inkling to believe you are worth less. This coming from a Indian woman, so this should be interesting.
So why do/did we think we as women are inferior? Is it based on physical strength differing between genders or just the inability to comprehend that value isn’t determined by how masculine men are compared to women. Well, let me just say that we all should wake up and smell the roses because we are not living in stone age times. It would be common then to think that men were superior because they were physically built to hunt and provide, but it doesn’t hold same weight now. Times have changed, women have developed and with tools and technology around, we as women too can achieve anything a man can.
My fight, or should I say purpose, is not to fight and show women we are superior than men, NO, It is to make women, and to the men reading, realize that we are EQUAL and are capable of achieving the same goals in life. In today’s day and age, we need to realize that we, women, can achieve same jobs/salaries as men, and with perseverance and confidence in ourselves, we can change the worldly structure of businesses placing higher values on men. This is, however, a process because the world has been brainwashed for far to long. Therefore the value we place on ourselves now, will help us achieve better conditions in our lives now but will only pave way to better lives of women in future. Hopefully that future isn’t to long away so we can see the fruit of it soon.
If any doubt remains, think of it in this way .. men are physically stronger than women by nature but women you overlook the fact that you are mentallystronger (don’t have as much testosterone in our bodies) which means we not as aggressive in nature. Through all the challenges we face, we still overcome them, easily sometimes and sometimes with alot of effort but we are OVERCOMERS. Disclaimer: we are however human by nature, therefore our capabilities differ. Hence women are sometimes physically stronger by comparing structure to men and men are also able to be mentally stronger, which boils down to how they were raised and how their mind was cultivated (Guess what though, that required a women’s touch as well). But this is a whole other topic on its on, so moving on.
The next step is just for women to REALIZE that we are by far greater than what we make ourselves out to be. For far to long, we let culture of world and culture of community we grew up in influence and shape our minds. It is time we start exercising our freedom by growing ourselves. It is time to realize YOU can conquer the world, YOU can climb the highest mountains, YOU can jump into the deepest oceans, YOU can fly the biggest aircrafts, YOU can be sit among men and be just influential in decision making, YOU can impact the world by just being you.
We don’t need to look at the world for confirmation that we are capable. We may at times have to work a little harder to achieve this but hardwork never hurt anyone. Hardwork builds character and character makes you who you are therefore don’t be afraid working hard.
Remember ladies, and men, you are always loved … Love helps you grow as a person and I live with unconditional love because God is love and loves us conditional. So to you all, JUST BE YOU because YOU ARE WONDERFULLY AND FEARFULLY MADE BY OUR CREATOR!
Happy women’s to all the South African Women reading this on the 9th of August. And if it’s not the 9th of August when you read this, happy women’s day to you to because women should celebrate WOMEN’S DAY EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Cape Town, a place I now call home but is it really. For some of you who dont know, and like my twitter page reads, I am a Durban girl trying to my way in Cape Town.
It has now been a year and a bit since I changed the province in which I reside in. The story of how I got to Cape Town is a miracle on its it own, but that I will leave for another post. The change of city’s went quite well if I may add, it was something any adventure junkie would love. However, with a year gone by, sitting back and reflecting over the time that has passed, you tend to ask questions that may not run through your mind a whole lot due to the lifestyle you lead.
These questions are along the lines of “Did I make the right choice?”, “Was the move and change of lifestyle worth it?”. These questions possibly seem like the hardest ones to answer right now, since it is the easter weekend and instead of going back to visit family, I am in Cape Town alone. Don’t get me wrong, being alone is something one needs to become comfortable with and as a person, one needs to love who they are and grow individually but in times like these, should I be back in Durban?
Again, a further explanation ought to be given before I continue further. I refer to my previous abode as Durban and not home and dont get me wrong, its not easy as I have debates with myself over it. But I refrain from calling it home, simply because I expect to create a life for myself in Cape Town and if I keep referring to Durban as home, I feel as though I am shooting down my hopes of creating a happy environment here. Home to me, simply put should be wherever you are.
However, another aspect to look at, is the fact that many of my friends who moved away from Durban still refer to Durban as home. I find it hard to understand why, the longing to be in Durban but the mindset that you most likely are never going to go back. Why antagonize yourself, why leave space for yourself to desire something but continue living somewhere else. Its only during the festive period do I question this, try and understand the logic and the conclusion shocks me because I begin to understand.
I begin to understand that as long as I live, whether in Cape Town or any other part of the country or even the world, Durban will always be the safe place, it will be the place I run to in times of need, the place that will grace my presence many a times because there will always be a need, a need to visit family, friends and a need to go back to appreciate where my life began.
Now whether I should be back in Durban during this festive period to fill the needs mentioned above, I cannot decide. There are many factors that didnt allow me to, responsibilities that made me choose not to go. But I will conclude that being alone in a city you moved to not long ago, during a festive period makes one vulnerable, makes on think and ponder on life. Makes you feel lonely but most importantly makes one dissect the deepest parts of ones inner soul. Its Deep I know hey, but its moments like these that make you grow as an individual and appreciate the person you have become and are still becoming because growth is an ongoing process which never stops.
My reason to move away from home, Durban, was so that I could grow. People may think otherwise, especially my parents lol. They would say I wanted freedom. That is true, but with freedom comes responsibility and growth and that was my end goal. I am proud to say that I was raised well by my parents and on top of that had the best advice giver/caretaker/papa/protector and provider always with me, being God.
Having said the above, the main questions can be answered now. Was it the right choice to move and was the lifestyle change worth it? My answer is a resounding absolutely yes. One, over the year I have grown more and more in God and am becoming the person God wants me to. After all, it was by his will that I got here so fast. Two, I am an adventure person and Cape Town is adventure fulled. Three, ok this should have two but im to lazy to rearrange my sentences, I have met amazing people on the way (even though I get lonely at times being away from family) and I am learning culture change from these people. Sometimes changing the environment you live in is needed to change the outlook/attitude you have for life. There are so many more reasons I could add im sure but just cant think of now but yeah the answer is clear.
For now, I can say that Cape Town is my home (because I do not know if its my final destination) but Durban will always be my forever home, the place I run to no matter where I am the world. They say your home is where your family is and that is Durban.
If you have read till this far, here is some advice, and as my pastor will say “it is for free so listen carefully”. If you planning on moving away from home for the first time, most likely reason is monetary because hello who doesnt like money. BUT please make sure that it is not the sole purpose and make sure the lifestyle change is something that will keep you happy and fit the needs of who you are as a person. Times are hard in SA, finding a job that pays well may only limit you to big cities but in that case, prepare yourself for feeling lonely at times. Dont count on the numerous friends you have and will make to be by your side 24/7. It may not be the case for everyone where they will feel alone but in case you do remember that feeling will pass and being alone allows you to enjoy you time and grow you as a person. And you are never completely alone, God is always there.
So Father, I pray for anyone who feels alone whether due to being away from home or even sitting in their home and feeling alone. I ask you that you just show them more of you in their times of need. Amen.
So my little story comes to an end for today. Stay tuned for the next episode lol.
In the meantime, pictures of Durban because everyone knows how beautiful Cape Town is but so they know the beauty of Durban
So one may ask what is this so called “Shine” I mention. Well to clear the confusion, its the name of our kids ministry at my church in Cape Town, Fathers House Christian Fellowship.
Having said that, its time for me to blog about about how this ministry is growing our kids (i talk as if im a parent but really im just stealing your kids and making them my own lol) and shaping them into the people who can conquer the world with God by their side.
The Shine Camp this year was titled Fearless and alot of the activities were centred around this. From talks about how God is always with you and how he guides and teaches you because he is powerful, to activities like obstacle courses that might have been scary for some kids, were all meant to empower these kids that all fears can be conquered especially with God by their side. Its amazing to realize that God works in marvelous ways, because the teachers were also inadvertently taught how to be fearless leaders. Well it helped me to understand my walk with God was so much bigger than just filling up my own spiritual needs but that we, as teachers, carry such a massive mantle because we hold the key to the future generation growth in God. Well thats my powerful thought for year done and dusted lol.
The way I make it sound, is like all we did in Camp was learn and learn and learn.Well we did, but we sure had alot of fun inbetween and while learning. Just to give you some indication as to what we did, here is a list:
- Team building exercises (I was proudly on the yellow team, but dont worry I loved all the kids equally hehe)
- Obstacle courses
- Treasure hunt and easter egg hunt
- Pool Party
- Rocket building and launching contest (Parents have the evidence at home lol)
- Bible time/quiet time
- Minute To Win It
If you look carefully, you will find a common theme amongst these activities. It required something called TEAMWORK. Its fun watching kids take part in activities until you realize that they like to win everything and anything. Being in a team, and being a big kid myself lol, you could imagine how I also wanted to win every challenge lol, but adulting is hard hey. Jokes aside, it was a process of getting my team to understand that they need to work together and that there is no ‘I’ in team. There was also an element that I noticed in my team, that the boys and girls didnt seem willing to work together and have confidence in each other. Stereotyping starts young guys. However, my battle was won, even though it was towards the end on Sunday, when I paired a boy and girl for a challenge and they won it. Hallejuah, praise the Lord. I make light of it but it was a marvelous moment for me. I was a proud teacher aka mum for the weekend lol.
So now I think its time to mention an activity that will bring tears to these kids parents eyes. Your kids cooked their own dinner for one night. They worked again as teams and started from scratch, girls cutting the veggies and meat and boys preparing the fire and potjie. Parents be proud, your kids made you proud. I can vouch for them because although we had our own food, I made sure I ate some of the kids preparations as well, and I was amazed. It tasted fantastic, havent eaten much potjies before but they sure made me enjoy it. (Evidence below)
A little more about my experience about camp and being apart of this minitry. I found this as a truly eye opening weekend, because I saw how special my kids are. I teach many of these kids on a Sunday and I got to bond with them on a different level. One of my special moments for the camp, actually brought a tear to my eye, was when the kids prayed for us. We did a fire tunnel and at the end we walked through with them laying hands and praying for us. It touched me at how a child looks at me, a sense of pure innocence and someone who meant every word they said. Children are so special and everyone should needs to have a heart like a child.
I have come to the conclusion that I will remain in Kids ministry as long as its the will of the father that I remain in it, which is probably a long long time. However, I can say Shine is ina good hands, thanks to the wonderful set of teachers we have. However, there is this one special lady that needs to be mentioned by name and that is Lynette. Your kids are in good hands.
Anyway more of my ramblings about camp lol. I felt so blessed to have these kids by me for the weekend. It was exhausting, yet very rewarding at the same time. I looked so relaxed and at same time like a unicon LOL, because when you with girls no matter the age, you do girl stuff and that means manicures and pedicures lol. Girls just wanna have fun! Below a picture of me all relaxed and I must add that the photo cred goes to one of the kids who I taught how to operate a camera .. made me so proud man!
Lastly, I just want to appreciate all the parents who sent their kids on this journey with us. It was truly special weekend for us all and something we all will remember for a lifetime. I raise a glass to all the memories created. To the year to come and till next year camp, im ready for you.
PS: If you dont believe my words, they say pictures are worth a thousand words. Below you will find some of the 600 photographs I took this weekend lol. Im young and free and im going to hashtag this post just becauwe I can.
